  Children's Classes

At the Academy of Martial Arts, we pride ourselves on our Children's Program. All Children's classes are taught by Chief Instructor Terry Dow, who has over 20 years of teaching experience with children. When looking for a program for children, one of the most important things to look for is not so much in WHICH art to enroll your child in, but which INSTRUCTOR is best for your child! We utilize positive training approaches that instill the following characteristics into children: RESPECT & DICIPLINE - CONFIDENCE & SELF ESTEEM - COORDINATION / FOCUS & AWARENESS

The Program teaches Children the basics of Martial Arts giving them a goal oriented approach to achieving higher belt levels, and improving their over all skills.

  Suspect Control and Restraint (SCR)

There is a growing need for modifications of conventional law enforcement Suspect Control and Restraint techniques. This course will enhance and improve on the basic defensive tactics already taught to law enforcement and will specifically focus on bridging the gap between the officer and a suspect during an altercation and maintaining control of a suspect during handcuffing and the subsequent arrest of the suspect.

With the SCR program officers will learn and become proficient in a wide variety of situations. In each situation, will be taught how to maintain control of a suspect during an altercation and how to end the altercation with the officer being uninjured and having complete control of the suspect.

  Iaido Sword

Historically, the samurai of Japan used Iaido as a fighting method. They were trained to draw their swords and battle their opponents using the quickest and most efficient moves possible. Attention to detail and accuracy were strongly emphasized as the smallest of mistakes could be fatal.

The origins of Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu (Peerless, Direct Transmission, True-Faith Style) can be traced back 450 years to Hayashizaki Minamoto Jinsuke Shigenobu (1546-1621) who was born in northern Japan. It is said that he wanted to avenge the death of his father and was inspired to create Shinmei Muso-Ryu (Divinity Inspired Unparalled Style) while praying for guidance. Over the last 450 years this style has evolved and has been passed down to different sokes or headmasters in charge of maintaining the integrity of the style. The current and 22nd soke is Takashi Ikeda Sensei.
